Rocky Mountain National Park offers the kind of setting that allows maternity sessions to feel expansive, grounded, and deeply personal. Many expecting parents choose RMNP when they want more than just a photoshoot — they’re looking for space to slow down, connect, and mark this season in a place that feels meaningful and timeless.
With alpine lakes, open meadows, and dramatic mountain views, the park creates a naturally cinematic backdrop in every season. Each RMNP maternity session is thoughtfully guided — with locations chosen for light, comfort, and variety — so the experience feels calm and intentional from start to finish.

Each maternity session here is thoughtfully designed around that intention, pairing light, landscape, and movement in a way that feels natural, unforced, and true to the experience you want to remember.
Planning a maternity session in Rocky Mountain National Park can be simple when you know what to expect. During peak seasons, RMNP uses timed-entry reservations, so we’ll choose a time that works best for light and crowd levels — weekday evenings are often ideal.
As of 2023, photography permits are no longer required for portrait sessions, which makes the process feel even more seamless. Seasonal factors still matter, though — during elk rutting season (typically late September through early October), areas such as Moraine Park may have closures, and I keep track of these updates so we can plan confidently.
The best part: you don’t need strenuous hiking for breathtaking views. I recommend scenic locations with easy access, so your session feels comfortable while still delivering the scale and beauty RMNP is known for.

Here’s why RMNP is one of the best places in the country for maternity photos:
It’s also one of my absolute favorite places to photograph.
No matter how many times I shoot here, it always feels fresh. The light, the textures, the scale—there’s something incredibly grounding about documenting this season of life in a place that feels so vast and timeless.
As an Estes Park photographer, I know how to shape the session around your comfort and your connection—so the final result feels natural, emotional, and lasting.

While this session was photographed at Sprague Lake and a nearby overlook, Rocky Mountain National Park offers several other breathtaking spots that I frequently recommend depending on the time of year and the experience you’re hoping for.
Moraine Park
Upper Beaver Meadows
Lily Lake
Each of these locations offers a slightly different feel—some feel more adventurous, while others are quiet and reflective. I’ll help you choose the best fit based on your style, comfort, and the look you’re dreaming of.
If you’re still deciding whether a mountain location or a studio setting is the right fit, I walk through both options in more detail in this studio vs outdoor maternity photography guide.
When is the best time to take maternity photos in Colorado? Most parents schedule their session between 28 and 34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully visible by then, but you’re still comfortable moving and walking. In Rocky Mountain National Park, late spring through early fall offers the best light and trail access.
What should I bring to my maternity session in the mountains? I’ll handle most of the details for you, but here are a few things I recommend:
Can I bring my partner or family to the session? Yes—partners are always welcome and encouraged to join! If you’d like to include older children or even your dog, we can plan accordingly and make sure the locations are accessible for the whole family.
Do I need to know the park well to plan a session here? Not at all. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’ve been to RMNP before, I’ll guide you through every step—from choosing the right spot to knowing where to park and what time to arrive.
Preparing for a maternity session in Rocky Mountain National Park doesn’t need to be complicated—but a few thoughtful items can make all the difference. Here’s what I recommend bringing along:
